Caught in the Middle: Finding Signs of Cavities Between Your Teeth

Cavities are sneaky and they can be even trickier to spot when they hide between your teeth. These hidden dots of decay, also known as interproximal cavities, can develop without you even realizing it! So, how can you tell if you have a cavity lurking between your teeth? Your dentist will know for sure, but until then, you’ll need to be vigilant. Continue reading to learn several signs that may indicate the presence of stealthy decay.

Sensitivity to Hot, Cold, Sweet, or Acidic Foods

One of the most common signs of a cavity is sensitivity, especially when you bite into something hot, cold, acidic, or sweet. If you feel a sudden, sharp pain or lingering sensitivity in a specific area of your mouth it might indicate a cavity between your teeth. This pain is likely due to decay wearing down your enamel, exposing the sensitive layer underneath.

To help reduce your discomfort, drink room-temperature water to wash away lingering food particles, acids, and sugars on your teeth. Additionally, you can dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds. This saltwater rinse can help reduce bacteria and temporarily balance the pH of your mouth.

Sudden Onset of Discomfort

If you notice a dull, persistent ache in your teeth, especially when chewing, it could be a sign of a cavity hiding between them. This discomfort is often more noticeable when you apply pressure while eating. Don’t ignore the pain—it’s your body’s way of signaling that something isn’t right! Over-the-counter pain relievers, clove oil, and other remedies can help you manage the pain until you can see your dentist.

Floss Getting Stuck or Fraying

If you floss regularly, pay attention to how it feels. If your floss gets stuck, tears, or shreds when sliding between two teeth, it might be because there’s a cavity creating a rough edge. Cavities can cause tiny gaps or rough spots, making it harder for floss to glide smoothly.

Bad Breath or Taste

Cavities can trap food particles and bacteria, leading to bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth. If you’ve noticed persistent bad breath, even after brushing and rinsing, it could be a sign of decay between your teeth. This issue won’t go away on its own and will likely get worse without treatment.

Visible Dark Spots

While cavities between teeth can be hard to spot, you might be able to notice dark spots on the surface of your teeth. These areas might be visible if you look closely in the mirror, especially with a flashlight. If you notice any discoloration, it’s worth getting checked out. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your teeth.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t panic! Just schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Early detection and treatment are key to stopping the decay from getting worse. With a little attention to detail and quick thinking, your smile will be on the road to recovery in no time!
