Do My Teeth Need Crowns or Veneers?

Lady thinks something over

Many people with stained or damaged teeth are interested in how their dentist can help them achieve more beautiful and functional smiles. While veneers and dental crowns are quite similar in how they are made and placed upon the teeth, these appliances are specialized to address different issues. Here’s a brief guide to the differences between crowns and veneers and how you may be able to tell which is right for you.

How Are Veneers and Dental Crowns Similar?

Veneers and dental crowns are manufactured in a similar way from similar materials, and the placement procedure for either device is nearly identical. The process begins with a consultation with your dentist so they can make sure that you are a good candidate for the treatment. Once you are approved, they will remove a small amount of enamel to make room and measure your teeth afterward. You’ll then receive temporary appliances and be scheduled for a follow-up appointment a few weeks later.

The measurements are then sent to a trusted dental lab where a skilled technician will use them to carefully craft your crowns or veneers. These appliances will then be sent back to your dentist’s office. You’ll then come back for your second appointment, during which your dentist will remove your temporary appliances, cement your new ones in place, make any final adjustments, and send you on your way to enjoy your new smile.

Crowns and veneers both last about twelve to fifteen years if they receive excellent care. Since enamel must be removed for these treatments, the treated teeth will have to wear these appliances for life, meaning that they will need periodic replacements.

How Are Veneers and Dental Crowns Different?

Veneers and dental crowns differ mostly in shape and purpose. To be more specific:

  • Veneers are thin shells designed to mimic the ideal appearance of natural tooth enamel, and they are usually cemented over the front teeth to conceal cracks, chips, stains, and gaps or to reshape them. These appliances are typically considered a purely cosmetic treatment.
  • Dental crowns are caps designed to restore teeth that have been compromised by tooth decay or injuries. These devices are used to allow damaged teeth to continue functioning properly, and modern crowns are so lifelike that casual observers probably won’t notice that they’re there.

Only your dentist can make a qualified call as to whether either of these treatments is right for you. If you are interested in dental crowns or veneers, the first step to getting them is to schedule a consultation at their office.
